Environmental Impact Assessment

Each country has its own requirements on EIA for energy projects. For example, in Thailand, EIA is required only if the size of power plant is above 10 MW. For plants of sizes less than 10 MW, an Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE) is required.

EIA should be conducted with a team of experts who are well versed in knowing the factors that affect the environmental settings. Public consultation should be done at the earliest as the project is proposed. It should be presented with transparency. In general, EIA needs to be presented with reliable and authentic information, justifying the establishment of the project.

EIA is done for assessing the positive or negative influences, a proposed project can create in an environment. These influences are analyzed through collecting primary and secondary data from the project site.

Primary data involves collection of present site conditions like air, water quality etc. and the secondary data involves data collected over many years to know about the environmental settings in that area.

It consists of description of the project, alternatives that have been considered, description of the environment, description of the significant effects on the environment, mitigation measures and non technical summary.

Project proponents are responsible for the preparation of EIA statement with the help of external consultants or institution.

Project proponents typically pay for and prepare the EIA. In some instances, the equipment supplier may be required to prepare an EIA for a power generation facility. In fact, the equipment supplier may prefer to do so in order to meet the commitments made with respect to equipment performance, fuel quality and commitments to limits on emissions, effluents and other discharges. For services related to EIA, contact us.
